Ceramics - Soda Firing - High Fire Functional Ceramics January 12, 2010

Mary DyeFor intermediate and advanced students, this course builds upon throwing and hand-building skills and explores soda firing techniques. Soda firing produces flashing and orange peel surfaces that are unique no two pieces look the same. Students develop an understanding of the chemical and physical changes that happen at each stage of the firing, such as the transformation (quartz inversion and body reduction). Be ready to experiment with soda ash as different quantities achieve various, exciting results. Students will spend some time outside of class loading, firing and unloading the kiln.
