The distinctive elements of Japanese art of the Edo period is the topic of a free illustrated lecture. The program is this fall's opening presentation in the free lecture series, "Centuries of Art @ Your Library," sponsored by This Century Gallery in partnership with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and Williamsburg Regional Library. Reservations are not needed for this free program.
Dr. Rosemary Smith, art historian from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will present "Japanese Culture During the Edo Period." The Edo Period (1603 - 1867) was the time of shoguns, samurai, Kabuki, and the famous ukiyo-e prints. This illustrated lecture provides the context for these elements and discusses the subjects, techniques and aesthetic principles of the ukiyo-e woodblock prints of Japan.
This series is made possible through This Century Art Gallery's partnership program with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). It has been organized by the Office of Statewide Partnerships of the VMFA and is supported by the Paul Mellon Endowment.
