This program explores the unique Florentine century -- its remarkable artists and that special family of bankers, merchants, politicians and art patrons known to history as the Medici. "This century is a golden age that radiates its brilliance over the liberal disciplines so long obscured -- over grammar, poetry, painting, architecture, sculpture, musicall of which excel in Florence." So wrote the great philosopher and humanist, Marsilio Ficino. Similar language was used by others, one of whom declared, "I thank God for letting me live in this age which all intelligent men agree is the greatest our city has ever known."
Dr. Ellet earned her MA and PhD from the University of Virginia and served as director of the Adult Degree Program and Community Education at Randolph-Macon Woman's College.
This series is made possible through This Century Art Gallery's partnership program with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) and has been organized by the Office of Statewide Partnerships of the VMFA, and is supported by the Paul Mellon Endowment.
