The 18th century English artist George Stubbs, best known for his "sporting art," is the topic of a free illustrated lecture presented by Jeffery Allison, Paul Mellon Collection Educator at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
During the 18th century, paintings of animals were not considered high art. However, English artist George Stubbs changed that opinion with his extraordinary depictions of horses. Like Leonardo da Vinci, Stubbs studied the anatomy of his subject meticulously. This lecture offers an in-depth exploration of Stubbs wide array of works, as well as the role he played in the Enlightenment.
This series is made possible through This Century Art Gallery's partnership program with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). It has been organized by the Office of Statewide Partnerships of the VMFA and is supported by the Paul Mellon Endowment.
