Workshops on Celtic violin and on mandolin - $25 for one, or $40 for both workshops.
2:00 -3:30 pm
Jamie Laval, Celtic violin
Irish and Scottish fiddle music is all about making people want to
dance. We'll begin with a brief overview of the history of Irish and
Scottish music and what makes it sound different from other styles.
Then, while in the process of teaching a couple of traditional tunes,
we'll look at how to practice efficiently, arrange material for
performances, and how to incorporate bowing and rhythmic patterns that
give a tune a good, danceable drive. I'll teach the class primarily by
ear, but sheet music of tunes and bowing styles will be given out for
home study. Basic ability on a stringed instrument is recommended. We
will encourage a fun, supportive learning environment in which no-one
will be singled out. Audio recorders welcome.
3:30 -5:00 pm
Ashley Broder, mandolin
Celtic Mandolin - Ashley Broder
This class will cover melody and harmony playing through technical
exercises for the left and right hands. Learn to play cleanly without
the distraction of "pick clack" or accidentally hitting open strings.
We'll go over warm up tips and practicing methods to ensure steady
progress on the instrument. By teaching small segments of tunes by ear,
we'll analyze what to listen for in order to pick up tunes more quickly.
We'll also discuss possible rhythms and harmonies that could be used to
accompany this tune. A basic knowledge of the instrument is suggested.
Audio recorders welcome.
