The Maggie, a gentle comedy about a Scottish captain who cons an American businessman, will be shown as part of the Celtic Film Series at the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland Street, on Wednesday, May 9 at 7 p.m. The program is free of charge and reservations are not needed.
This 1954 comedy is produced by Ealing Studios, the same company that produced such classic British comedies as Kind Hearts and Coronets, The Lavender Hill Mob and The Ladykillers. The Maggie, like these others, is lightly satirical and reflects aspects of British character, society. The film will be introduced by Robert Maccubbin, professor emeritus of English at the College of William and Mary, an expert on Scottish literature and culture.
The Library presents the Celtic Film Series in cooperation with the local chapters of the St. Andrew Benevolent Association and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. The series explores the history, drama and quirky humor of films made in or about Scotland and Ireland. For a list of this season's films, go to www.wrl.org/programs
