Celebrating Artist Sam Karres and his Sketchbooks October 24, 2012

Join us for a public exhibit and reception to honor urban expressionist painter Sam Karres who recently donated sketchbooks, dating from 1975-1996, to the University of Michigan Library. The collection will support the study of both Greek America and Detroit.

This exhibit will showcase drawings, most in pen and ink, that give visual insights into Detroit and the many characters Karres has encountered along the path of his life. Brief remarks in the Gallery of the U-M Hatcher Graduate Library will be followed by light refreshments.

Artist Sam Karres has spent his life deriving inspiration from the city of Detroit. With a sketchbook always in hand, he captured Greektown before the casino, at a time when it was truly a Greek neighborhood. Karres worked as an illustrator for Ford Motor Company for 25 years, but he didn’t let his job interfere with his personal artistic life. He considered it a great way to live: work eight hours, paint eight hours, and sleep eight hours.
