In celebration of World Oceans Day, the New England Aquarium and its partners will host a free event Sunday, June 5 on the Harborwalk featuring hands-on education activities, sustainable seafood cooking demonstrations, habitat restoration exhibits, and much more.
Under the theme of Dr. Suess’s children’s book, “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish,” the World Oceans Day celebration will include family-fun activities with ocean facts, oil spill recovery and awareness information, green products and an introduction to the Aquarium’s live blueTM Ambassadors program for teens. Youth volunteers will talk about how small daily lifestyle changes can impact the environment and the health of our oceans.
Through education, research and conservation, the New England Aquarium is cultivating widespread public awareness about its live blue™ initiative, which promotes greater individual responsibility in improving the health of the oceans and the earth.
Four local chefs will also serve up Seuss-style sustainable seafood selections: One Fish (mussels), Two Fish (hybrid striped bass), Red Fish (Gulf wild red snapper), and Blue Fish (Bluefish). Visitors will learn cooking and seafood shopping techniques from culinary masters: Jose Duarte of Taranta Restaurnt, Alexis Girhiny of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, Chris Kanaple of Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel, and Tyrone Todman of the New England Aquarium.
Aquarium partners exhibiting at the celebration include Oceans Approved LLC, MIT Sea Grant, Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, Gortons Seafood, Polar Beverages, and the Charles River Watershed Association.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. rain or shine on the Harborwalk behind the New England Aquarium, Central Wharf, Boston. The event is free and open to the public. For more information visit www.neaq.org/oceansday.
