Friday Nights at the de Young: Cultural Encounters
Friday, February 22, 2008, 5:00–8:45 pm
Celebrate Gilbert & George, the de Young Museum’s new special exhibition, with live music, a film screening, and a community art project at Friday Nights at the de Young on February 22. Identifying as living sculptures in art and daily life, Gilbert & George put themselves at the center of their artwork. The continuously innovative and challenging art of the acclaimed British duo has established them as two of the most important and recognized living artists. This Friday’s program includes a screening of The World of Gilbert & George, the artists’ only feature-length film, at 7 pm in the Koret Auditorium. In the film, they explore the bleak urban surrounds of 1980s London, powerfully evoking the desires and tensions of its disillusioned youth alongside their own eccentricities. Also enjoy live music by Sid Luscious and the Pants (6:30¬–7:15), and dance to the sounds of DJ Laird (7:30¬–8:30). There will be a docent tour of Gilbert & George at 7 pm, and all visitors are invited to share their visions and voices in the de Young’s community mural project. On Friday nights the entire museum stays open until 8:45 pm and visitors can enjoy cocktails in Wilsey Court and dinner, drinks, and appetizers in the de Young Café.
Regular gallery admission prices apply on Friday nights. Admission includes access to all festivities including live music and interactive art projects.
