Friday Nights at the de Young: Cultural Encounters
Celebrate Carnaval San Francisco
Friday, February 29, 2008, 5:00–8:45 pm

Friday Nights at the de Young celebrates the 30th annual San Francisco Carnaval on February 29 with music, art, and the closing reception for the February artist-in-residence. Enjoy live music by the Carnaval All-Star Band who will perform salsa, samba, and the music of Trinidad in Wilsey Court. All guests at Friday Nights are invited to fashion their own glitzy Carnaval masks to wear in the Carnaval San Francisco celebration in May. There will also be a closing reception for the de Young’s February artist-in-residence, David Wagner, who has been working in conjunction with Carnaval San Francisco. A New Orleans-born artist, Wagner has been leading workshops at the de Young in which visitors help create larger-than-life masks that will be featured on four floats in this year’s Carnaval San Francisco parade in May. The special exhibition, Gilbert & George, and the entire museum stay open until 8:45 pm. On Friday nights, docent tours of Gilbert & George are given at 7 pm; cocktails are available in Wilsey Court; and the de Young Café serves a special dinner menu, drinks, and appetizers.

Regular gallery admission prices apply on Friday nights. Admission includes access to all festivities including live music and interactive art projects.
