Happy 200th Birthday Catonsville! For two centuries, generations of Catonsville families and businesses have worked hard to make our village a wonderful place to live, work and play.
As we prepare for the 64th Annual Catonsville Parade and Fireworks in this birthday year, we think it is important to take a look back at the history and achievements of our community. We hope that all the 2010 parade entries will incorporate the 200th birthday theme and make this a birthday bash to remember.
Since 1947, the community of Catonsville has celebrated Independence Day with a Grand Parade. It started when a Catonsville resident, Marie O’Dea, wanted to provide a “safe and sane holiday” for the community. She felt that deaths and injuries on the highway could be reduced if the community could stay home and take part in a full day of activities. Thus, the first parade was held and six decades later, the two hour parade is an integral part of Catonsville’s July 4th tradition. A fireworks display was added to the festivities in the 1950’s and today, is a regional favorite attracting an estimated 60,000 people each year.
This year’s parade and fireworks will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2010. The parade and fireworks are part of a 13 hour day of patriotic festivities beginning at 9:30 a.m. and continuing until 10:30 p.m. that also includes children’s games, races and concerts. We invite you to participate in all these activities and enjoy this fun-filled Catonsville tradition.
