Stebbins was inspired by childhood trips through the desert and views the world as a full-scale diorama framed by the rear window of a 1963 Chevy station wagon. She finds the geographically remote inspiring. The “right place” drives the tedium from her mind into a world of imagination and possibility. “Vast, harsh deserts; dirt roads leading to unseen canyons; beautiful places that I know could also be dangerous, are like homing devices for me. Places where I feel insignificant yet powerful, connected, and wholly alive” says Stebbins.
The locations in these large scale color photographs create feelings of connectedness and ascendancy, anticipation and maybe a little dread; locations that transcend the confines of time, where the past coexists with the present, and fact and fiction become one. The viewers Intuition determines if the given locale is special or just another vacant lot, a hallowed site of worship or tragedy.
