Cathedral of St. John the Divine Unveils Largest Ever Art Exhibit, The Value of Water, Displaying Works from Over 40 Artists September 22, 2011

CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOHN THE DIVINE UNVEILS LARGEST EVER ART EXHIBIT,
THE VALUE OF WATER, DISPLAYING WORKS FROM OVER 40 ARTISTS

Exhibit, Featuring Works by Mark Rothko, Sparks Conversation on Global Water Crisis

The Value of Water: Sustaining a Green Planet, a new art exhibition at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street), Manhattan, will be on display from September 22, 2011 to March 25, 2012.

The exhibition, the largest to ever appear at the Cathedral, will feature the work of 41 contemporary visual artists, including Mark Rothko, Jenny Holzer, Wiliam Kentridge, Kiki Smith, Bill Viola, Pat Steir, Gregory Amenoff, and others whose work focuses on depicting and reflecting on water.

Works from the artists, including paintings, sculptures and multi-media pieces, will be displayed in all areas of the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, from the Great Crossing to the Nave, Chapels, Bays and other intimate areas. Highlights of the exhibit include William Kentridge’s animated film “Tide Table,” made from charcoal drawings repeatedly erased and drawn over; Kiki Smith’s glass installation “Ten Elements of a Dewbow,” clear, elongated dewdrops arranged on the floor, Mandy Greer’s “Mater, Matrix, Mother and Medium,” a 300-foot fiber river of recycled yarns and fabrics that will hang and flow above guests’ heads, and pieces by Mark Rothko.

The Cathedral has scheduled a number of related programs for 2011/2012, involving all departments of the Cathedral: poetry, music, drama, storytelling; public forums and discussions with artists, poets, activists, journalists and scholars; an evening of witness; and workshops for school children and college students.
