Photographer and printmaker Cary Benbow of Cincinnati, Ohio is the featured artist at Signatures of Switzerland County during the month of March. Benbow’s exhibit will open on March 6 from 6-9 pm during Vevay Main Street’s First Friday event.
Benbow’s love of photography was immediate when as a teenage he learned how to use his parent’s 35mm camera. Experienced in the publishing industry, he has also worked as a proofreader, layout artist, photo scanner, photographer, photo researcher, photo editor and archivist. He is currently employed as a manager in Higher Education Publishing in Cincinnati.
Born in Muncie, Benbow grew up in Greenfield, IN, and obtained a BFA in Fine Art Photography from Ball State University. His work has been exhibited in over a dozen group and one-man shows throughout Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.
“I use a variety of photographic processes and techniques to explore common themes of life,” said Benbow. “I rely upon the viewer to compare my images to their own experiences to produce a feeling of familiarity within unfamiliar contexts.”
The artist, who straddles the line between traditional and digital image making, invites the viewer to tap into their own life experiences to see parts of themselves; to compare his images to their own memories and hapefully produce a feeling of familiarity. Benbow’s current work and experiments can be found on-line at http://flickr.com/photos/cbenbow/.
Signatures is located at 120 West Main Street in downtown Vevay, Indiana. The First Friday event is from 6-9 pm and is free and open to the public. Store hours are 10am-5pm Monday-Saturday and 11am-4pm on Sunday. First Friday hours are 10am-9pm.
