Cartright & Prayer for Animals play Lion's Lair, $5, 21+.
Cartright, birthed from the back roads of Texas, is pouring fresh water on the roots of rock ‘n roll. Growing up in the south has allowed this young quartet to create “the best of Americana in a rough-and-tumbling folk-rock set that would make South by Southwest crowds salivate”, says Sam Machkovech of the Dallas Observer. With the release of the band’s debut EP, “A Tall Tale Comes of Age (an assessment of violent entertainment)”, Cartright is preparing to take on the lonely road promoting the album. The five chapters that make up “Tall Tale” combine the acoustic talent of Ben Russell and his angst-ridden lyrics, such as “you broke my wrists -- but I’m still making fists”, with the gritty yet intense musical proficiency of the band. Their influences ranging from punk to old gospel, Cartright’s dangerous Southern pop takes their listeners on a nostalgic, foot stomping, hell raising, sing-a-long journey.
Prayer for Animals, formed in 2005, is currently headquartered out of Austin, TX. They grew out of being friends with similar music interests in Mansfield/Arlington, TX to a group of talented musicians about to embark on their second tour (with Cartright). They came out with a self-titled CD earlier this year and are currently unsigned. "They write songs that have a good deal of range in composition and style. The most obvious reference points here are Brian Jonestown Massacre and Matador Records' The Double, but you can also hear touches of Radiohead, Television Personalities and the excellent Circulatory System. The fun of listening to this band derives not from their influences, however, but from their ability to diversify, letting strange folksy guitar plucking turn into moody, ethereal noise and blues-based psyche rock." (from WeShotJR review) Prayer for Animals has had the privilege to play with acts such as Gris Gris, The Willowz, The Black Angels and Ghostland Observatory over the past year.
