The Homeless Christmas Tree" sounds like a children's tale and, in fact, the book which inspired this play is a children's story. But this play is about the woman behind the children's story and she did not live a fairy-tale life. Carla lived and worked for a time at the Presbyterian Night Shelter, and it was during that time that she began to decorate the "homeless Christmas tree." There are some men, women and children there who are good people just "going through a bad patch," as Carla says in the show, and many overcome their temporary circumstances and leave the shelter for more normal lives. "The Homeless Christmas Tree" is a story about hope, Christmas, and an extraordinary city full of caring people. It embodies the incomitable spirit of Texas.
