Career and Recovery Resources, Inc. (CRR), a non-profit United Way agency that helps persons identify and overcome barriers to employment, will recognize Steve and Sheila Miller for their advocacy for social service, healthcare, education, economic growth and diversity within the Houston community during the thirteenth annual Barrier Breaker Award Luncheon on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency Downtown. Jerome Gray of KPRC Local 2 will serve as MC for the afternoon.
Steve Miller is the Chairman and President of SLM Discovery Ventures Inc. He is the retired chairman of the Board of Directors, President, and CEO of Shell Oil Company. Miller has served on the board of organizations like Reliant Energy, University of Illinois Foundation, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Board of Visitors, Rice’s James A Baker III Institute of Public Policy, Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management Council of Overseers, Rice’s Board of Trustees, St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System, the Greater Houston Community Foundation, the Center for Houston’s Future and the Greater Houston Partnership. He was also honored as United Way’s Volunteer of the Year in 2007. Sheila Miller, a graduate of the University of Illinois in education, is active with her alma mater including the College of Education and the Sheila M. Miller Professorship in Education. She has served with the United Way, was a board member for Bayou Bend, and is active with the Steven and Sheila Miller Foundation’s philanthropy. She is a full-time mother and manager of her family, as well as an active participant of her church.

Why: The Barrier Breaker Luncheon, hosted by CRR, is held annually to laud inspirational community leaders who have achieved success or have helped others to overcome barriers to success. Luncheon proceeds benefit the agency’s specialized training and employment programs for job seekers who often have multiple barriers to employment. Services include career counseling, job search preparation, intensive case management for job placement and retention, computer classes, and substance abuse treatment, prevention and education.
