This must-see Australian play from Award-winning playwright and director Toby Schmitz, Capture the Flag, is a gripping, intelligent and unlikely story that sees coming of age meet historical apocalypse in a unique and immersive theatrical experience. Capture the Flag is playing at Riverside Theatres from May 24 to May 28.
Berlin. 1945. The last gasp of World War II. Three young boys huddle for days in the sewers as the Russian tanks rumble through the streets above. Karl and Albert are members of the Hitler Youth, firm in the belief that “your body belongs to your nation”. Herret is desperate to get back to his mother, but he knows enough to fall in line. The rules of their favourite game have changed and now the bullets are real.
Conditioned to fight to the last bullet, the boys bicker amongst themselves as they must determine how to survive. They debate the promises made to them by Hitler and they talk of the prospect of love and dream about their first kiss. What will the sudden arrival of a teenage girl running from the occupiers bring to these boys desperate to become men before their time?
“This is a powerful and engaging piece from one of Australia’s most talented and promising playwrights, Toby Schmitz. The issues and emotions in Capture the Flag transcend the time period and are poignant for audiences today,” said Director of Riverside Theatres, Robert Love
Toby Schmitz's Capture the Flag is a dark, intelligent and unlikely story where coming of age meets historical apocalypse. Reminiscent of gritty historical dramas about political decline such as Downfall and Underground, Capture the Flag is also sprinkled with hints of classic coming of age tales like Dead Poet's Society or Stand by Me. It is through the unique combination of the historical and the personal that makes Schmitz's work so unique and engaging.
Acclaimed as an actor in Sydney Theatre Company's Travesties and Company B Belvoir's Ruben Guthrie, Toby Schmitz is also a successful writer and director, winning the 2002 Patrick White Award for his play Lucky and the 2004 Australian National Playwrights Award for Chicks will Dig You!.
