Joss Whedon Fans Raise Money for Charity
Fans of Popular TV/Film Creator Hold Special Screening of “Serenity”

SAN DIEGO – Fans of popular television and film writer/director Joss Whedon will host a fundraiser Sunday, June 22 to benefit Equality Now, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending violence and discrimination against women around the world.
The annual event is called “Can’t Stop the Serenity,” in homage to Whedon’s popular film “Serenity.” The event raised more than $100,000 last year and this year’s goal is to raise $150,000.
A special screening of the movie “Serenity” will be held at 7 pm on Sunday, June 22 at the UltraStar cinemas in Mission Valley. All proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales will go to Equality Now. A drawing for prizes will also take place.
Tickets are available at www.sdbrowncoats.com or at the theater the night of the screening if not already sold out.
The event is organized by local fan clubs, the San Diego and SoCal Browncoats, with support from the non-profit California Browncoats, Inc. The movie “Serenity” was only made after Whedon’s fans rallied around his cancelled television show “Firefly.” Whedon is also the creator of the popular television shows “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel.” His new television show, “Dollhouse,” will premiere January 2009.
"Can't Stop the Serenity" began in 2006 with the idea to have mass screenings of “Serenity” around the world timed to coincide with Joss Whedon’s birthday and to raise money for Equality Now. It received the blessing of Universal Studios, which set aside prints and offered a special licensing rate to allow fans to raise money for Joss Whedon’s favorite charity.
Equality Now was founded in 1992 to work for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women around the world. Working with national human rights organizations and individual activists, Equality Now documents violence and discrimination against women and mobilizes international action to support their efforts to stop these human rights abuses.
Raising money for charity is not new for the Browncoats. They previously raised money at the San Diego International Comic-Con for the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation, who provided two scholarships for children of local Marines killed in Iraq. In addition to San Diego, California Browncoats will hold “Can’t stop the Serenity” screenings of the movie Serenity in Pasadena (June 20) and in Irvine (June 21)
