Announcement of Choreographers
CandoCo, winner of Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for Dance, 2005, is delighted to announce that RAFAEL BONACHELA and ARTHUR PITA will be creating work for the forthcoming 2007/08 season.
Rafael Bonachela, winner of the Place Prize 2004, whose choreographic credits include Rambert Dance Company and Kylie Minogue, describes himself as a movement junky. In addition to his own movement vocabulary, he finds inspiration in the visual arts and popular culture, which gives his work a distinctive style.
Celeste Dandeker, Artistic Director says “Rafael’s work is so fresh, I’ve been keen for him to work with the company for some time. His movement is beautifully striking; so charged with energy, it will be a real technical challenge that I know the CandoCo dancers will rise to.” This piece is co-commissioned by the Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank Centre and will be performed to a specially commissioned music score.
In contrast, Arthur Pita, Associate Artist at The Place from 2002 – 2004 who has recently choreographed ‘Showboat’ at the Royal Albert Hall and ‘Snow White in Black’ for Phoenix Dance Company, will be transforming CandoCo into an Appalachian mountain family complete with buck-teeth and a noose, with his unique theatrical take on movement.
This new piece, set to a country and rock soundtrack “will create a theatrical world of dark humour, bursting with visual images, with skittish characters and brazen dances” Arthur Pita.
Celeste Dandeker says “these two choreographers will give the dancers an exciting opportunity to create and perform work in completely different styles, and provide a thrilling treat for the audience.”
