From a diamond-studded seahorse brooch to an enamel insect hatpin, Jean Schlumberger created some of the 20th century's most glamorous jewels, combining the colors, shapes, and rhythms of nature into exquisite creations for Tiffany & Co.
Pierce MacGuire, who as director of the Schlumberger collection at Tiffany & Co. is responsible for maintaining the historical integrity of Schlumberger's designs, shows how Schlumberger used sketches and drawings to develop his intricate creations, working out every shape, color, and texture on paper. Works of art in themselves, Schlumberger's drawings also served as guides to the craftsmen who transformed his ideas into objects.
After the lecture, MacGuire shares examples of Schlumberger's most spectacular jewels, such as the lotus bracelet illustrated at right.
The lecture complements the exhibition Made for Manufacture: Drawings for Sculpture and the Decorative Arts, which explores how artists of the 1400s, 1500s, and 1600s used drawings to design three-dimensional objects such as tapestries, sculptures, metalwork, and stained glass.
