“Warren Oates in the Economic Crisis of 2008”
January 17- February 21, 2009
Curated by Dave Bryant
Telephone conversation, late 2008.
"Good afternoon, Warren Buffet's office? (pause)
Pardon me? (pause)
No, this is Warren Buffet's office, there is no one here named Oates. (pause)
That's okay, have a nice day."
Group show to open at Okay Mountain this January loosely themed on deceased character actor Warren Oates, whose honest, no-frills portrayal of the down and out made him a cult icon. His movies were mostly low-budget, mostly underground, mostly tough, wild, and lonely. He was maybe in the background but usually stole the scene; both strange and familiar, old and new.
Participating artists were not given Warren Oates as an assignment, but rather have been identified as being from the same cut as the actor. As the current economic climate is in continual unrest and fears that the artworld may not withstand it all, what are we to learn from these artists at this particular time? What are they making right now?
