One of Jazz St. Louis’ 2011-2012 residency artists, Byron Stripling is a major voice on the trumpet. His remarkable career has included stints with the great big bands of Clark Terry, Lionel Hampton, Woody Herman, and Count Basie, solo work with many orchestras, among them the Boston Pops, appearances on recordings by artists as diverse as Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, Sonny Rollins, and Jim hall, and tours with his own quartet. A charismatic soloist (who sings as well), he will remind you one minute of Louis Armstrong and then play the next chorus with lightning runs and startling intervals right out of be-bop. No one plays the trumpet the way he does.
“Byron Stripling–a towering and powerful trumpet player. When he played…the effect was an abbreviated version of jazz in two choruses.” – Los Angeles Times.
Two sets starting at 7:30 and 9:30.
