Buster Williams, a bassist with virtuosic technique and an unmistakable sound, debuted with Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt (at 17!); backed singing legends Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughn and Nancy Wilson in the ‘60s, anchored Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi sextet into the ‘70s, and co-founded the Timeless All-Stars and Sphere after that. Now he often fronts his own quartet, which The New Yorker magazine has hailed as “modern, mainstream at its best.”
