BUFF MONSTER
"Happy Squirter"
Opening Reception: Friday, June 1, 2007 from 8-11pm
On View: June 1 – June 23, 2007
Corey Helford Gallery is pleased to present "Happy Squirter", an exhibition of new works by Los Angeles street artist Buff Monster. Buff Monster is known for changing the landscapes of Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Barcelona with his iconic Buff Monster character - described by The New York Times as a “devilish scrubbing bubble gone bad.” He will unleash his talent onto the walls of Corey Helford for his first solo show with the gallery. Buff Monster’s series of acrylic on wood and metal paintings, collages, and wall paintings will transform the space into a visual candyland. An opulent display of more than seven hundred custom printed balloons will intermingle with the show’s centerpiece, a squirting boob fountain. Inspired by graffiti, heavy metal, porn, and ice cream, Buff Monster’s "Happy Squirter" marks a new direction for the artist while retaining his trademark “Pepto-pink” palette. His work continues to evolve with the introduction of Maraschino Cherry imagery and hand-silkcreened pieces. This exhibition presents a cleaner, more stylized mode of expression for the artist. Open to the public, the reception for "Happy Squirter" will take place on Friday, June 1 from 8 to 11pm, and the show will be on exhibit until June 23, 2007.
Born in Hawaii, Buff Monster moved to Los Angeles and attended the University of Southern California where he earned degrees in Fine Art and Business Administration by day and postered the streets with his hand-screened posters by night. He has worked on projects with Nike, Vans, Hurley, Vivid, and Hustler and recently completed an installation at The Standard Hotel in Hollywood. This July, he will launch a signature line of toys at Comic-Con in San Diego. Buff Monster has been featured in Juxtapoz, Artweek, The New York Times, LA Weekly, YRB, Vapors, and XLR8R, and the June issue of Angeleno will include an interview with the artist. He has exhibited in numerous galleries worldwide such as Gallery 1988, 181 Martel, New Image Art, OX-OP, and Andenken Gallery, and his work can be seen in Room 303 of San Francisco’s Hotel des Arts.
