This course introduces the beliefs, practices and major forms of the Buddhist tradition as a world religion. It begins by exploring the life, religious background and teachings of the Buddha, and explores the traditions major developments that occurred as a result of its spread through Asia and into the West. We will consider the ways in which the Buddhist tradition has survived by adapting successfully to the various cultures that have adopted it, including its incorporation of Asian indigenous traditions, and its adaptation to contemporary Western spiritual practices.
