Dr. McCoy, a USS Indianapolis survivor, comes to The History Center to discuss his five harrowing days waiting for rescue in shark-infested waters. The USS Indianapolis delivered the world's first operational atomic bomb to the island of Tinian on July 26, 1945. At 12:14 a.m. on July 30, 1945, the ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine and sank in 12 minutes. Out of the 1,196 men aboard, 900 were left floating in the shark infested waters without lifeboats, food, or water. Shark attacks began the first morning and continued until the survivors were spotted, by accident, four days later. Only 317 men survived. Call (407) 836-8580 for reservations. Free, or for a small charge, pre-order your lunch and have it waiting when you arrive!
