Internationally-acclaimed actress, humanitarian and cultural icon Sophia Loren will be the next Brilliant Lecture Series speaker. The Conversation with Sophia Loren will be held Friday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at Brown Theater, Wortham Center.
Often named one of the most beautiful women in the world, Loren’s acting career and cultural influence spans more than six decades. In 1992, she was named a U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Goodwill Ambassador and has remains a tireless advocate for youth, women and human rights.
Born Sofia Scicolone in Rome, Italy on September 20, 1934, she grew up in the slums of Pozzuoli during WWII. Her life took an unexpected turn when she entered a beauty contest and caught the attention of renowned film producer Carlo Ponti, whom she married in 1966.
In her late teens, Loren played lead roles in many Italian features such as La Favorita and Aida. A diverse and storied career in the United States quickly followed. In 1961 Loren earned the first Academy Award presented to a lead performer in a non-English speaking role and later received an Honorary Academy Award in 1991.
