The 1st International Conference of Agrogeology was held 14-27 April, 1909 in Budapest, Hungary. You are invited to celebrate the legacy of the Agrogeology conference and the 100 years of advances in soil science in a series of meetings in September 2009.



The central event, “Bridging the Centuries: 1909 – 2009” will be a one-day conference and a one-day field excursion on 16 and 17 September, 2009. The conference will take place in the same buildings of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Geological Institute of Hungary, and the field excursion will visit some of the same locations, where the participants (including Glinka, Murgoci, Ramann, Sigmond and others) of the 1909 conference discussed their ideas on soils.
Complementary events will be organized before and after the central event.



The central event, “Bridging the Centuries: 1909 – 2009” will be a one-day conference and a one-day field excursion on 16 and 17 September, 2009.
The first day conference will be dedicated to the historical overview of 100 years of achievements in soil science and soil policy and the definition of goals for the next century.



The invited papers will include the following major topics:



Beyond the horizons
Welcome messages on behalf of the organizing institutions.



Legacy from Agrogeology
Contribution of the 1st meeting and Agrogeology in general to the evolution soil science.



Trends in soil science and scientific communities
Overview of developments of disciplines and scientific communities since 1909.



A century of learning
An inventory of achievements in the topics of the 1st Agrogeological Conference: on the nature of soils, soil investigations, soil mapping, soil policy.



Foundation for the future
Visions and responsibilities for tomorrow: awareness, research, education, policy.



Voluntary posters in the above topics are invited.



After the conference, a reception will allow participants to celebrate the legacy of agrogeology and exchange their thoughts for tomorrow.

On the second day, a field excursion will re-visit some of the locations of the 1909 field excursions. Historical discussions will be quoted and modern soil observations demonstrated at soil profiles near Budapest.
