The North American Premiere of Brian Eno's 77 Million Paintings will be held at San Francisco's foremost venue for contemporary art, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The art installation will be up for only three nights, and is presented by The Long Now Foundation, a San Francisco non profit dedicated to fostering long-term responsibility. Two evenings are open to the general public and the final night is set aside for members of Long Now, in appreciation of their support for the organization.
In addition to the 77 Million Paintings installation in the Forum, the Grand Lobby will set up for conversations and refreshments, including a full bar, and will also have demonstrations of Long Now's Clock and Library projects.
Conceived by Brian Eno as "visual music", his latest artwork, 77 Million Paintings is a constantly evolving sound and imagescape which continues his exploration into light as an artist's medium and the aesthetic possibilities of "generative software".
Thumbnail of 77 Million Paintings by Brian Eno
He first created 77 Million Paintings to bring art to the increasing number of flat panel TV's and monitors that often sit darkened and underutilized. Now Eno is also showing large installations of this work, recently at the Venice Bienniale and Milan Triennale, and in Tokyo, London and South Africa. The installation at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts will be the North American Premiere of his work.
77 Million Paintings - Timeline example
The installation is mesmerizing; comprised of flat panel monitors, running multiple instances of 77 Million Paintings, the kaleidoscopic displays and slow, rhythmic evolution of the artwork create a singular experience for the viewer.

Brian Eno is the patron saint of the exploratory mind - if you miss this, your brain will never forgive you. Be there!
A true rule breaker.
See you Sunday night!
i'm there Sunday night too.
if you're interested in this kinda work, check out scott draves hi fi dreams... brian eno is certainly not the first (or even necessarily a "pioneer") in the direction of generative art... his name just happens to carry alot of weight... though I do respect the man and he is a unique communicator...
perhaps most importantly about this event is its connection to The Long Now Foundation which is a brilliant, sf-based group that promotes long term thinking. they have an unbelievably awesome monthly local gathering with amazing speakers... check their archives for downloadable podcasts to the lectures... sooooo much great stuff in there...
There's actually a long now seminar on Thursday eve (tonight), the night before the YBCA exhibition opens: http://www.longnow.org/
