Japan's virtuoso player, Kinya Sogawa, who trained under shakuhachi mater Katsuya Yokoyama, will lead participants in the basic techniques of the shakuhachi. In the beginner session, participants will learn the principles of sound production, breath control and finger technique, and study a basic honkyoku piece. Open to those who have had at least minimal experience making a sound on the shakuhachi. In the intermediate/advanced session, Sogawa will engage participants in a deeper exploration of playing fundamentals, musical forms and structure through the detailed study of a honkyoku piece. This session is open to those who have had 2 or more years of experience studying the shakuhachi. Participants in either session are encouraged to stay for the other session at no additional cost.
