Breads and Tortillas: Delicious Traditions. Come to the Peralta Hacienda Historical Park and its Multimedia History House on Saturday July 11, 2 - 4pm and eat your way through history! Yum!
At the July 11 event at Peralta Hacienda, you can learn to make tortillas from scratch, and they are so sabroso that way!! Expert tortilleros will be on hand to guide you through the steps, and you get to cook them on a comal on an open fire.
After you fill up on fresh hot tortillas, try the Fry Bread station. This mouth-watering Native American specialty is an integral part of Fruitvale's food traditions. Fruitvale has one of the highest concentrations of Native Americans in the U.S.
From the Gold Rush, the third station will feature hoe-cakes!
This all happens outdoors in the shade of the massive adobe wall with 3-D exhibits telling the story of What Happened Here, and all these activities are utterly and scrumptiously free!
And what about the Mexican pastries for which Fruitvale is famous? A huge variety of complimentary pastries like the Peraltas would have eaten in the 1800s-fresh from the oven of Pena's Panaderia-will be offered in the Peralta House kitchen for everyone who takes a tour of the Multimedia History House, Antonio Peralta's 1870 farmhouse.
Here, you will step into the past, with sounds, sights, smells and textures to delight the senses. The old home, restored to its original conditions, is filled with exhibits that evoke the story of the family who once owned the whole East Bay-45,000 acres from El Cerrito to San Leandro!-and the Native Americans with whom their fate was intertwined. The house tour also features audio stories of today's Fruitvalians of many cultures, and gives you will the chance to leave your own story. Exhibits created by Gordon Chun and Holly Alonso.
