This is a non-credit Community Education class geared to exposing the attending students to several facets of Brazilian Culture. “Culture”, as defined by Carl Coon in his Culture Wars and the Global Village: A Diplomat’s Perspective, is the “totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of work and thought characteristic of a community or population.” As such, and in order to attain this purpose, multimedia presentations and lectures integrating history, geography, literature, music and arts, amidst other themes, will be shown and discussed in class. Brazilian movies relating to each unit are also integral to this class. Statistical data, when presented, will be compared to similar information pertaining to the United States of America in order to enhance understanding. Pre-existing knowledge of Portuguese Language is not necessary; however, useful.
