Brave Combo Returns to Jovita’s on Saturday, December 4
With a Holiday Extravaganza to Kick the Season into High Gear

Denton, Texas’ Brave Combo makes a Ho-Ho-Ho! return visit to Jovita's Restaurant & Live Music Venue in Austin on Saturday, December 4 with a holiday extravaganza of good music, good cheer, and more fun than a barrel of sleigh rides. The 9:00 p.m. show continues the band’s tradition of holiday merry-making at the venue; last year’s holiday show is still reverberating. “It’s always a great time of year for us,” band founder Carl Finch says. “Jovita’s is one of the coolest venues in Austin. The food, the people, the sound of the room—it’s all great. We’ll be doing a lot of your Brave Combo holiday favorites—traditional tunes that we’ve put our spin on, but we’ve got some new tricks up our sleeves this year as well. We always say ‘Christmas is just around the corner,’ but this time it actually is!”

Brave Combo, now in its 31st year, has released over 30 albums, including several holiday collections. The most recent holiday CD, Christmas Present, features a wealth of styles, including a cha cha cha take on “We Three Kings,” “Feliz Navidad” dressed up as a cumbia, a twisting twist on “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” and the samba parade of “O Christmas Tree.” Combo’s latest album, Kikiriki (pronounced kee-kee-reé-kee) was released in 2010. It finds the band all over the map: from the Serbian brass band infused title track, to the polka-swinging rendition of “Just Because,” to a haunting, rain-drenched take on the “Polish National Anthem” and beyond. Who else could make happy bedfellows of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” the Bee Gees “Holiday,” and a traditional Russian waltz? Leave it to Brave Combo.
Over the course of its career, Brave Combo has won two Grammys, worked with David Byrne on his True Stories cult classic, been animated for an episode of The Simpsons, had songs featured in numerous TV and film soundtracks, and redefined givens of “world music” as a genre. Polka, salsa, rock, cumbia, conjunto, cha cha cha, twisted classical and tango are only a few of the styles the band has made its own, and always with a distinctly Brave Combo-esque touch. They’ve been called “America’s Premier Dance Band” for good reason—a typical night will have even the stodgiest audience member joining a conga line or discovering his inner Chicken Dancer.
Don’t miss Brave Combo at Jovita's Restaurant & Live Music Venue on Saturday, December 4; showtime is 9:00 p.m., and tickets are $10. 1619 South First, Austin, 78704, telephone 512-447-7825; jovitas.com, and brave.com/bo.
