BOTANIZING CALIFORNIA: THE VARIED FACES OF MOUNT SAINT HELENA. The massive bulk of Mount Saint Helena is impressive from many views. Rising to over 4,000 feet, this mountain spearheads the Napa Valley, separating it from the Clear Lake area and serving as a major meeting point for a diverse variety of plant communities and trees. Highlights include oak woodland, mixed-evergreen and conifer forests, riparian woodland, chaparral, grasslands, and serpentine barrens. Our driving tour will take us around the mountain, stopping often to look at how slope and soil determine a wide mix of interesting plants, a few restricted to this area alone. Trees include oaks-blue, coast live, canyon live, interior live, Garry, tanbark, and leather-along with coast redwood, Douglas-fir, incense-cedar, sugar pine, gray pine, knobcone pine, and ponderosa pine.
