BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
HERBERT BLOMSTEDT, conductor
RICHARD GOODE, piano
NIELSEN Helios Overture, Op. 17
MOZART Piano Concerto No. 18 in B-flat
BRAHMS Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98
Richard Goode, one of the esteemed Mozart pianists of our time, performs the Concerto No. 18, one of the dozen mature Vienna concertos, with the BSO and Herbert Blomstedt. Blomstedt also conducts the great Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s concert overture Helios, celebrating the passage of the sun. Hans von Bülow, who premiered it, said about Brahms’s final symphony, “Unparalleled energy from beginning to end.” Brahms had called it “a bunch of polkas and waltzes.” Understatement of the musical century.
