In this outrageous dark comedy, the author of Six Degrees of Separation, Jphn Guare, puts his off-the-wall characters in bizarre situations and turns them loose. Henny is a loquacious blind woman, who attempts to ward off cancer by waving around a plastic statue of St. Jude. Her son is pushing 40, and with a name like Scooper it's no wonder he goes to the psychiatrist three times a week. In a world that discourages connections, he manages to connect with a literary nut case named Deirdre. Because it's August, their shrink is on vacation when they become wildly -- even murderously -- passionate, landing them in the hospital where everything unravels except the bandages.
