Born to Run Black Sheep 5 k run
(Plus One Mile Fun run and family walk)
May 13th 2012

The Black Sheep 5K Run was created by Hilary Goodman, the owner and operator of an athletic store Born to Run, in Springfield Pennsylvania. She started the races in honor of her nephew who passed away in 2006 from complications relating to Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy. The “Black Sheep” run is specifically for runners with dogs, baby joggers, headphones, and other groups ordinarily excluded from regular 5K races. From the first race held in 2006, the money raised was donated to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association. But when Mrs. Goodman read about the “Wheeled Scotsman Foundation” in the local newspaper, Born to run decided to donate the money generated from these races to our organization The Wheeled Scotsman. This now allows all proceeds to pay for home renovations for physically disabled people who can’t otherwise afford the necessary modifications.

The first race was in Oaks PA back in 2006 with a few brave runners and some wet weather it was a great experience. In 2007 we held two runs; our first one was in Warminster and the other one back in at the original location Oaks Pa. With the help of many great supporters the foundation was able to use 100% of all raised funds to help benefit people in the surrounding community. In 2010 the Wheeled Scotsman Foundation suffered a great loss when it’s President and Founder Joseph Harper past away. Joseph’s family wanted to keep the foundation going to honor his dream which was not to be self-centered but to lend a hand in your community, and always trying to find ways to help others that needed the assistance. The dream was to be able to help formulate a more accessible route to the everyday things that people may take for granted. Installing ramps for your home to shower modifications that are safer and more equipped for wheelchairs, along with other meaningful equipment. The foundation has gone from being able to help one family a year to helping over five families a year. That may not sound like a significant number but when you factor in that the foundation pays 100% of all the costs of any project we take on, that number is a great accomplishment.

The Wheeled Scotsman Foundation was fortunate in their ability to help the Hatboro YMCA by donating an ADA wheelchair approved enclosed shower. This will allow for all the members that require the use of a wheel chair around the pool area the ability to enjoy a shower that is now safe and accessible at the end of a swim session. This donation was made possible by our supporters and great friends of the foundation that make it to our events each year. We would also like to thank Mr. Ed Simmons for helping with the delivery of this item.

In 2011, Klinger middle school came on board to help with this dream and that event had one of the best turn outs so far. We are looking forward to having the students and teachers return again this year as well. Being able to have our board members come out and talk with the students on ways of helping others in the community and educating them on youth outreach programs we cannot Thank you enough for all the help the school has given to the foundation

In 2012, the Born To Run Black Sheep 5K races will again be held in Warminster. On May 13th at the Warminster Community Park, We are expecting an even bigger turnout this year, and we are looking forward to being able to help a very deserving member of our community with the funds that our generated.
