Powell Gardens' traditional family-friendly 'Booms & Blooms Festival' kicks off the long Independence Day weekend. Let the kids take a spin (or a hundred!) through the cool spray of the Fountain Garden and be sure to tour the new Heartland Harvest Garden. A huge selection of daylilies by McConnell's Plant Land will be for sale as well as homemade frozen custard in fresh flavors from an old family dairy farm recipe. Live music begins at 4:30 p.m. with the New Red Onion Jazz Babies and continues when the Lee's Summit Symphony takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. A dramatic fireworks display over the dark country sky immediately follows. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Picnics and coolers are allowed today, or purchase food from Cafe Thyme's outdoor grill.
