Bay Area R&B icon Booker T. Jones and Detroit’s “Great Lady of Soul” Bettye LaVette kick off the Festival’s 71st Season with an afternoon of soul.
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Booker T. Jones is a legendary figure with an impressive string of hits, including the million-selling “Green Onions.” He has performed as a session musician on some of R&B’s most seminal songs, including “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” and “Try a Little Tenderness.”
Veteran soul singer Bettye LaVette is a master vocalist who has been cutting singles since the age of 16. With her industry breakthrough in 2000, she has become an unstoppable force with her soulful lyrics and commanding stage presence.
Today’s performance is dedicated to the memory of Rosalie M. Stern, donor of Sigmund Stern Grove to the people of San Francisco and founder of the Stern Grove Festival Association.
