HAKKEBOLLE: A Norwegian Folk Tale

This is the story of Hakkebolle, the youngest brother who must prove himself to the King by retrieving items stolen by the local Troll to win the hand of the princess.

Hakkebolle is a story translated from Norwegian into English by our Great Aunt Rakel Erickson. Her two books written at the age of 90 and 92 are entitled Folkeminnevitskap and Folkeminnevitskap II. Folkeminnevitskap, meaning knowledge of the memories of the people.

The 19th Century Sven Grundtvig wrote (translated into English):

Pure and clear,

it is the duty of the Present

To bring the voices of the Past

to the ears of the Future.

This was the aim of this writer.

The Erickson Cousin Puppeteers are Ruth Blom, Karen Elliott and Paul Robinson.

Karen Elliott (flautist and soundscape) has been playing the flute for 25 years. She has performed professionally in the Twin Cities with Flute Forte, Encore, and most recently, HOBT. Karen has a B.A. in Secondary - Mathematics Education from Bethel College in St. Paul, MN. At Bethel, she was a member of the Concert Band and studied privately with Mary Wilson. Karen currently teaches flute at the School of Fine Arts at New Life Academy in Woodbury and is a math tutor.

Paul Robinson (creator, storyteller/puppeteer) is In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre’s Company Manager. He has been associated with HOBT since 1997. He also served as the Program Director for First Night Greater Grand Forks for three years, 1994-96, directing all of the activities related to artistic programming and logistics.
