Yan Pascal Tortelier, conductor; Nicola Benedetti, violin. Tower: Tambor; Chausson: Poème for Violin and Orchestra; Ravel: Tzigane for Violin and Orchestra; Stravinsky: The Firebird (1945 version). Tambor, the Spanish word for drum, was composed by Joan Tower as a commission and premiered by the PSO in 1998. Works by Paris-based contemporaries Chausson and Ravel are performed by the young Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti. Stravinsky’s The Firebird is a soaring and moving ballet based on a Russian folk tale about a magical and elusive bird. Come early to hear the Gypsy Strings perform in the lobby.
