Manfred Honeck, conductor; Matthias Goerne, baritone. Mahler: Selections from Des Knaben Wuderhorn; Mahler: Symphony No. 5. On the 100th anniversary of Mahler’s death, Honeck presents an all-Mahler program. The poems from Des Knaben Wunderhorn played an important role in much of the composer’s music. Mahler’s Fifth Symphony begins with an ominous trumpet call. The Adagietto movement is one of the most recognizable of Mahler’s works and was featured in the movie Death in Venice. By the end of the Symphony, joy triumphs in the exuberant finale.
