Black Mountain College was an institution founded on principles of progressive education, where process was valued more than the final product. The College fostered an open environment which encouraged students and instructors to actively seek the feedback and involvement of their peers. This non-competitive atmosphere frequently led to collaborations between artists working in different media and disciplines. Many visual artists at Black Mountain College began collaborating with their colleagues in music, dance and literature, creating interdisciplinary works that expanded the traditional boundaries of art making.
