Over 2.5 million African American men registered for the draft, and black women also volunteered in large numbers. While serving in the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, they experienced discrimination and segregation but met the challenge and continued to persevere. They served their country with distinction, and made valuable contributions to the war effort, through their struggles and sacrifices.
The Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum has planned a memorable event in honor of black veterans. Participate in a scavenger hunt which will arouse curiosity, lead to questions, and promote learning. Experience museum exhibits that trace the involvement of African Americans from the Revolutionary War through current times and visit our theater to view special film clips. Explore USS SILVERSIDES, a WWII Submarine, and USCGC McLANE, a 1927 Coast Guard Cutter, and experience the history of these vessels.
Every Wednesday participate in the Soul Food Sampler Lunch with commentary by a local food historian, for only $3 extra. Call 231-755-1230 for reservations and more detail.
