Black Francis is perhaps best known for his work fronting alt-rock band the Pixies, formed in 1986. The Pixies are often credited with starting the 90s alt-rock boom. Kurt Cobain, of the band Nirvana, often paid homage to the influence that the Pixies had on his band's music. After the Pixies broke up in 1993, Black Francis embarked on a solo career with the stage name Frank Black. Later on, he added a back-up band, releasing albums under the name Frank Black and the Catholics. The Pixies reformed in 2004 and Black Francis readopted his stage name in 2007. Since his first solo effort in 1993, Frank Black, he has released over 15 albums. His most recent record is Svn Fingrs, released in 2008. His lyrics explore everything from historical events to surreal science fiction scenarios. Musically, Black Francis is mellower than the Pixies while still being strongly rooted in the alt-rock style.
