This exhibition examines the struggles of African Americans against slavery and racism from the American Revolution to 1830. On display are the books, pamphlets, and newspaper articles of those who championed equal rights and forged new organizations and institutions to serve the growing free black community. Their insistence on multiracial democracy affirmed the "certain inalienable rights" asserted by the Declaration of Independence. The gallery is located at 1314 Locust Street, Philadelphia. Hours are Mon-Fri, 9 am-4:45 pm. Open to the public free of charge. For more information, call 215-546-3181.
