World-famous Canadian producer Daniel Lanois comes to the Twin Cities with his new ensemble "Black Dub."
Black Dub is an utterly unconventional mating of its dissimilar principals. There are Blade's sophisticated but inherently swinging beats and grooves. There are Whitley's vocals and instrumental backings, which can coo like a French chanteuse, mince like an electronica riot-grrrl and scrabble deep into the grit and silt of the Delta blues like her late father.
And, through it all, there is Lanois' spacious guitar ambience, redolent of New Orleans voodoo, the rubbery dub-hedonism of Jamaica, where he has lived for the past 15 years, and the bleak landscapes of his native Canada. Bassist Jim Wilson rounds out the group, filling in for New Orleans native Daryl Johnson
