Kathy Nichols examines the information we know about Lincoln’s visit to Farmington including his activities while there, the impact of his relationship with members of the Speed family, and an analysis of the famous “Bread and Butter” letter to Mary Lincoln.
In 1841, Abraham Lincoln visited Farmington, the plantation home of his closest friend Joshua Speed, on the Bardstown Pike then outside Louisville. This three-week vacation immersed the future emancipator in the planter lifestyle and its slave economy. He also forged relationships with people who would become important to his administration and Kentucky during the Civil War, including future Attorney General, James Speed. In a post visit letter to Mary Speed, Lincoln records one of his earliest comments on slavery.
