Birmingham’s XO eXpO
The First Event of it’s Kind
The XO eXpO will focus on the implementation of Birmingham's XO Laptop Initiative and the impact of technology on Birminghamʼs future
leaders. It is expected to bring together educators, parents, students, business, political, and community leaders who are invested in this program.
The XO Expo will be held on August 23, 2008, at the McWane Science
Center from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and will include two sessions.
Space is limited for the first session, (9:00 am - 11:30 am), and is designed for leaders, educators, and other
supporters in the Birmingham community. It will feature speakers from the Mayor's Office, Birmingham City
Schools, One Laptop per Child, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Topics will include: the vision and financial sustainability of the program, voices from educators associated with
the pilot program at Glen Iris Elementary School, the future of the project in Birmingham, Birmingham's place in the
worldwide XO community, and status of education and technology literacy in Alabama and Birmingham.
The second session (1:00 - 3:00 pm) is open to the public with their general admittance to McWane Science Center. Magic Seth, a renowned computer scientist and magician, will kick off the second session by wowing the Magic City with a magic show incorporating the XO Laptop. This is followed by an exposition featuring students summer projects using the XO Laptop, UAB's preliminary research on the impact of the
project, the XO Hospital, and other activities.
